Peace of Mind Guide

Home security for elderly parents living alone: a practical Cheshire guide

Living alone doesn't have to mean feeling unsafe. A handful of simple, unobtrusive security changes — nothing complicated, no monthly contracts for the essentials — can make a real difference to how safe someone feels in their own home.

Why this matters for someone living alone

Feeling secure at home isn't just about locks — it's about being able to let a carer, cleaner or family member in without worrying about a hidden key, seeing who's at the door before opening it, and having lighting that comes on automatically after dark. These are small, practical changes, not a full alarm system or a big upheaval.

Signs it might be worth a look

What actually helps

These are the jobs I fit most often for exactly this reason — each one is a fixed price, and every price includes supply of the item, fitting, and showing you how it works before I leave.

Key safe supplied and fitted£65
Video doorbell fitted and set up£160
WiFi solar security camera fitted and connected£140
Battery/solar motion-sensor light£80
Smoke alarm installation£60
Carbon-monoxide alarm installation£60
Shed, gate and outbuilding locks and hasps£60

Worth knowing: the cameras fitted are solar/battery-powered, so no mains wiring or electrician is needed. Doorbells and cameras need a reasonable home WiFi signal — if it doesn't quite reach, a signal booster can sometimes be fitted at the same time, always checked with you first. See the full security & peace of mind service page or the complete price list for everything else.

Arranging this for a parent? You're very welcome to book on their behalf, and to be there during the visit — whatever's easiest for your family.

Common questions

Does a key safe compromise security?

No — modern key safes use a strong combination lock and are fitted to solid brickwork, not to a door itself. It's a trade-off many families are comfortable with, giving carers or family quick access without leaving a key under a mat or with a neighbour.

Do video doorbells need a landline or broadband installed?

They need a home WiFi connection and a smartphone to view alerts on, but no landline. If your WiFi signal doesn't quite reach the front door, a signal booster can sometimes be fitted at the same time.

Are the security cameras battery or mains powered?

The cameras fitted are solar and battery-powered — no mains wiring or electrician needed, and no ongoing subscription for the essentials.

Can I arrange this for a parent living alone?

Yes — every job has a fixed price agreed before booking, and you're welcome to arrange everything on their behalf. I'm happy to explain how everything works to them directly too, so nothing feels like a mystery.
